Adaptive reuse of Wiechert’s Mills in Starogard Gdański

Abstract
The main objective of the work was to create a sustainable project for Wiechert mills in Starogad Gdański. It is currently barren falling into disrepair, to which contributed not only years of lack of maintenance of the buildings, but also the fires, which occurred. In the case of this particular complex it was important to not only revitalize the buildings, but also to restore his once a significant role in the development of the region and usefulness to society.
The basis for the creation of the project were analyses: historical, urban, landscape, and socio-economic. Also case studies of revitalizing properties with similar functions and from a similar period from different regions of the world, to see what solutions work best in similar situations and adapt them to the needs of the complex. Based on this analyses, guidelines for the project was created, which is the transmission of theoretical knowledge to practical applications which allowed to adapt solutions in the best possible way.
The most important of the made analyses was historical analysis, through which it was possible, by examining the history of the object, its origin and development, maintaining the character of the complex, keeping its authenticity and historical value, while maintaining consistency and aesthetic function, as well as restoring its integrity, which was lost as a result of the post-war changes that have taken place. This has been achieved through a connection of individual buildings with appropriate connectors, maintaining the flexibility of the architectural forms and emphasizing the original facades with contemporary elements contrasting with them.
In the course of the design work was necessary to remember about omnichanneling object with the environment, fitting him in the character of the area and allowing to occure as many interactions with key elements of the city as is possible. Therefore, complex harmonizes perfectly with the City Park, is seamlessly communicated and easily accessible from the square, as well as improves traffic in the city and provides additional parking space.
To sum up in the creative process has been managed to restore the integrity of the object, while maintaining its high aesthetic and not losing historical value, creating a place from which effectively can profit not only every resident of the city, but also the inhabitants of the region, since the project involves the use of object to economic development. However, it does not satisfy only this function, but also recreation, through the many interesting elements, made available for public use. In this work has been restored to the city one of his most beautiful and the characteristic elements in a way that can fill the pride of all its inhabitants.
